Ernst Züllig began his career at TV Romanshorn. After a stopover at GC Zurich, he played between 1975 and 1987 at Pfadi Winterthur. In 1980 he participated in the Olympic Games in Moscow and is thus one of the few handball players in Switzerland, who have an Olympic diploma in handball.
In the league it was never enough for a big title. In 1980, he became top scorer in the National League A. He completed a total of 251 games in the highest league, scoring 1165 goals. In the national team Ernst Züllig debuted on October 30, 1971 in the game against the GDR. Totally he was allowed 176 times the dress of the Swiss national team and scored 748 goals.
